Priority says: Prioritise Your Happiness

Are you happy with your current position? Do you wake up raring to go to work each day?

Here at Priority, we believe that if you aren’t happy, and you don’t wake up wanting to go to work, you’re not doing it right.

Mark Twain said: "Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life." If the pandemic has taught us one thing, it's to appreciate what you have - family, friends, work - life's too short to leave avenues unexplored and risks untaken.

According to the ONS, the UK employment rate sits at a little over 75% as of April 2021. To put that into perspective, that’s around 50 million people who are employed in jobs that they may, or may not enjoy doing.

Of those 50 million, how many do you think are genuinely happy with their jobs, their work routines, salary, location?

Various surveys across the web suggest around 50-60% are happy with their current job, which, of course, means around 40-50% are not.

Switching employers, of course, has its risks - which is why so many people choose not to venture outside their comfort zones, or try to push for more. ‘The grass isn’t always greener’ has become many peoples’ mantras, but what does make that grass greener?

Happiness (greenness) at work is usually down to a few factors:

Locality – Are you close to the office? Easily commutable?

Salary – Are you earning enough money?

Workload – Is your workload overwhelming, or not enough?

Progression – Are you stuck? Or have you got the opportunity to progress within the company?

Peer groups – Do you get along with who you work with?

It’s usually the case that where you have one, you’re missing another. For example, you may be earning copious amounts of money for the job you’re doing, but the workload is horrendous and you hate everyone at work.

The goal is, obviously, to have all of the factors combined into one great role, and if you’re lucky enough to have that – props to you! But, the harsh reality is that you’re more than likely going to need to prioritise some things over others.

So, prioritising your happiness – Think about what makes you happy. What about your job at the minute do you think could be better in a different role? Perhaps during the lockdowns you've become accustomed to working from home, spending more time with family and would like more of that involved in a future role.

It's all very possible. There's something out there for you. All you need to do is take the leap with us! Our team collectively boasts over a century’s experience within the recruitment industry and all have a passion for matching you with your ideal role – whether that be more locality, more money, progression opportunities - whatever floats your boat!
